You are searching for a gift from Scotland and don’t want to go into the touristy souvenir shops? Then the Royal Mile Market is the perfect place for you. Over a dozen stalls offer jewellery, cosmetics, beautiful drawings of Edinburgh, clothes and personalized phones cases, hearts or wooden coasters, everything produced in Scotland. The prices are not the cheapest, but the handmade products are worth it. Apart from the market, you’ll find a tourist information and an exchange bureau as well.
Even if you don’t want to buy anything, just go to have a look and enjoy the lively atmosphere. The market is placed in an old church, not being used for religious services since 1952. If your eye catches the floor made of chipped wood, do not wonder. It hides a secret – archaeological remains of an old street called Marlin Winds. Someday, they want to put in a crystal floor, so that everyone can admire the discovery. For now, just ask at the tourist information. With a bit of luck, somebody will have time to guide you down.
Insider tip: Don’t forget to look up and contemplate the stained-glass windows.
