The Ocean Terminal is a generic shopping centre in the Leith area of Edinburgh. It’s about a 20 to 25 minute drive from the centre of Edinburgh and on its own it would be unlikely to draw many guests.
However, Ocean Terminal is a gateway to one of Edinburgh’s largest tourist attractions the Royal Yacht Britannia. Britannia was the Queen Elizabeth’s vessel for 43 years up until it was decommissioned in 1997. It was used to ferry Queen Elizabeth and many other royals around the world as well as playing host to many foreign dignitaries whilst the Queen was visiting different parts of the world. The exhibit gives an insight into both the political and the informal side of Britannia. For instance there is a slide on the deck of the boat that the princes William and Harry played on when they were onboard.
There is a very good audio guide which helps you slide through this magnificent exposition. It is a display for everyone even those who have no care for royalty it is fascinating to see the quirks and life on this ship. There is a good reason that it’s “Scotland’s Best Visitor Attraction” (Visit Scotland) and certainly is well worth a visit.
